Meeting My Future Self

A Meditation on Acceptance

A couple of months ago, I did a meditation where I traveled into a future timeline to seek guidance for my present self. I was curious whether a wiser version of me—someone who had lived through more—might offer insights to help me live more fully now. I didn’t aim for a specific age, just whatever point in my future held the answers I needed.

I visualized myself moving through a short tunnel of light. On the other side, I was greeted by my future self—around age 85. She was radiant, full of energy and joy, as if she had been expecting me. With a warm smile, she exclaimed,

“Life is so much fun—it’s such an adventure! I love how things are here.”

She explained that Earth had changed. People were more cooperative, and harmony was more common. Humanity had shifted into a higher state of consciousness.

Returning to the Vision

Inspired, I returned to the meditation about a month later. This time, I met myself at age 70. She appeared peaceful and centered—and again, she seemed to know I was coming.

When I asked if she had any advice, she replied simply:

“The key to happiness is to accept everything.”

That message has stayed with me.

The Myth of the Perfect Life

We often hold onto a fairytale version of how life should look. We set expectations shaped by culture, upbringing, or personal ideals:

• Marry the perfect partner.

• Be the kind of parent whose children are always happy.

• Reach a certain level of income or recognition.

While dreams and goals are valuable, life doesn’t always follow the script.

Maybe we’re here to resolve karma with a partner, and the relationship ends up being more about growth than comfort.
Maybe our child struggles in ways that even the best parenting can’t fix.
Financial abundance may be rewarding—but it doesn’t always bring peace.

Maybe the issue isn’t how life unfolds, but how we perceive it.

 Transformation Through Acceptance

Even painful experiences can become catalysts for transformation. They may be the very things that shape us into people of depth, compassion, and purpose. At any point, we can choose to release the past and create a new present—and a new future.

How to Meet Your Future Self

You can do this “future self” meditation to invite peace and clarity into your life:

1. Set an intention to meet the version of you who holds the answers you need.

2. Visualize a path leading to them. Walk toward your future self.

3. Don’t try to control it. Don’t decide what age you'll be or what they’ll say. Just observe.

4. Let it unfold naturally. Allow the imagery, words, and feelings to arise without your mind interfering.

5. If nothing comes, that’s okay. Trust the process. You can return to it another day with a quiet mind.

 The Bigger Picture

The path is ultimately about growth—doing our best in relationships, learning to love ourselves and others along the way. Life is messy. That’s true for everyone.

And maybe that’s the greater lesson.

Acceptance—of ourselves, our experiences, our journey—may be part of a larger shift in human consciousness. When we change our perspective, we open the door to healing, joy, and collective transformation.
